Playing with food is most definitely the best part about cooking. Might also explain why I am almost always relegated to dish duty...

Class A Gargantatron

These are my eggs... This is a grocery store 'jumbo' egg carton... That is as far as the lid is physically able to close. When I give them to customers, I have to use one of those extra, extra big rubber bands to hold the whole thing even semi-closed. And you can forget about stacking the cartons!
Since we are so obviously at least one, if not more, sizes above the jumbo grade, a new name for our new class was clearly in order. Thus, I present to you, Free Range, All Natural, Happy Brown Eggs, " Size Gargantatron."

most wonderful time of the (trash) year...

Bulk pickup day! It's basically a yard sale extravaganza, but FREE. Here in the valley, this much anticipated event occurs only annually, and is run by the township, rather than the trash company. So rather than having to scour the neighborhood for lucky finds, all the area's discards are conveniently located in one warehouse! After dropping off three items myself (a truly sad foldout sofa that was in use long before I was even born, as well as two almost equally tenured mattresses) I came home with only two rescues. And since two is less than three, I am quite clearly sticking to my plan to clean out my barn... One of my finds was a wooden office chair with nice bones begging to be reupholstered, but the crowning achievement was this fantastic wooden porch swing in almost perfect condition! The wood is in great shape, only needs to be lightly sanded and gussied up with a paint job. Insert saying referring to one man's trash, etc...

homemade pesto

For as long as I can remember, my mother's homemade pesto was one of the definitive tastes of summer. As I grew older, helping her make batches of pesto from the heaps of fresh basil in our garden became another summer tradition, one which signals the coming end of the season and thus intensifies our appreciation for these fleeting flavors. Five months from now, digging into that rich green sauce in the middle of the winter can bring an infusion of summer into the dreariest day.
